Performed in two
very famous and traditional opera houses, yet this production was not exactly
opera and not exactly musical theatre. A hybrid, to be sure, and crossover it
was. With a large international cast of opera singers, including Raina
Kabaivanska and Gino Quillico, and well-known Italian actors such as Federico
Pacifici, Emilio Dino Conti, and Clara Zovianoff, as well as the Italian opera
director, Giorgio Marini, and American conductor Steven Mercurio, this
production was unique and special from the beginning. It was televised
throughout Italy on RAI TV and played to sold out houses in both Italian and
English – all in honor of the 100th Anniversary of Kurt Weill’sbirth.
