Sunday Morning

Sunday Morning

It’s a most sacred time of the week for so many.

I've spent a lifetime singing in church and throughout my career.

Today, it's a sweet honor to be able to share the live recording of "How Can I Keep From Singing?" that I performed during my tenure as Soloist of The Mother Church (TMC — international church center in Boston, MA).
During the pandemic, like most churches and other institutions, the physical services are closed and everything is online. Today’s solo is presented in the online Sunday service broadcast from TMC, and it’s available to listen 24/7 for the next 7 days.

Though I sang a beautiful arrangement by Sally DeFord Music, “How Can I Keep From Singing” is an American folksong composed by Robert Lowry as a hymn set to lyrics attributed to “Pauline T.”

This hymn embraces many denominations, which I truly love!

It’s a universal melody married to a timeless lyric, and thus it is firmly planted in the collective human consciousness -- I believe, for generations to come.

I find incredible comfort and sacred joy in this hymn. It also expresses this spiritual journey of life — filled with the obstacles and fears that try to block our progress — and the affirmative challenge to rise up, outsmart, and overcome!

For all of that and so much more, “my life flows on in endless song!” Is at any wonder, then, that I ask, “How can I keep from singing?”

Here are the lyrics:

My life flows on in endless song;

Above earth's lamentation,

I hear the sweet, tho' far-off hymn

That hails a new creation;

Thro' all the tumult and the strife

I hear the music ringing;

It finds an echo in my soul—

How can I keep from singing?

What tho' my joys and comforts die?

The Lord my Saviour liveth;

What tho' the darkness gather round?

Songs in the night he giveth.

No storm can shake my inmost calm

While to that refuge clinging;

Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,

How can I keep from singing?

I lift my eyes; the cloud grows thin;

I see the blue above it;

And day by day this pathway smooths,

Since first I learned to love it,

The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,

A fountain ever springing;

All things are mine since I am his—

How can I keep from singing?
